Jakarta, Sunday, October 18, 2026

Sunday mornings in Jakarta have their own special atmosphere, especially during Car Free Day (CFD) along Sudirman–Thamrin, stretching toward the Senayan area.

This morning, I spent some time at Car Free Day in Thamrin. As usual, streets that are normally packed with cars and motorcycles were filled with people walking, jogging, cycling, spending time with their families, and, of course, hunting for delicious street food.

From my personal observation, I’d say maybe 30% of the crowd was actually focused on exercising.

The other 70%? Probably more interested in finding something good to eat. Haha!

Of course, that’s just my impression, not an official statistic.

But beyond the exercise, food, and lively atmosphere, something else caught my attention.

It reminded me of an important life lesson.

Sometimes, All You Need to Do Is Step Outside

I once came across a piece of advice somewhere. I can’t remember exactly where I heard or read it, but the message was something like this:

When you’re feeling sad, overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck with too many thoughts, try stepping outside. Look around and see how life continues beyond your own problems.

Sometimes, we become so caught up in our personal struggles that we forget there’s an entire world outside, filled with people fighting their own battles.

This morning, walking through Car Free Day in Jakarta, that message came back to me.

I saw thousands of people, each with their own reasons for being there.

Some were exercising to stay healthy. Others were enjoying quality time with family or friends. Some simply wanted to escape their daily routines.

But there was one group of people who really caught my attention.

The street vendors and small business owners were working hard to earn a living.

Behind the Crowds, There Are People Who Have Been Working Since Before Sunrise

If you’ve ever visited Car Free Day in Jakarta, you know it’s not just about exercising.

It’s practically an outdoor marketplace.

You can find almost anything: food, drinks, clothes, shoes, accessories, and all kinds of products and services.

Some people even offer consultation services.

Seriously, there’s always something unexpected to discover.

But what impressed me wasn’t necessarily what they were selling.

It was their determination.

Think about it.

While many of us were still comfortably sleeping, these vendors were probably already awake, preparing their products, packing their equipment, and traveling to the location.

Some may have arrived before sunrise just to secure a good spot and get everything ready.

While we come to Car Free Day to relax, exercise, or enjoy our Sunday morning, they come with a different purpose.

To earn money.

To support their families.

To keep their businesses running.

And hopefully, to return home with enough income to make the day worthwhile.

Watching them reminded me of something simple but powerful:

Everyone is fighting a battle we may know nothing about.

A Simple Reminder to Be More Grateful

Let’s face it.

Life isn’t always easy.

We all deal with problems: work pressure, financial struggles, family responsibilities, relationship issues, and countless other things that sometimes make life feel overwhelming.

There are days when we feel exhausted.

Days when nothing seems to go according to plan.

Days when we lose motivation and wonder why life has to be so difficult.

And those feelings are completely normal.

But watching people work so hard from early morning gave me a different perspective.

It reminded me that life is challenging for everyone, just in different ways.

We don’t know what those vendors are going through.

We don’t know how much money they’ll make that day, whether business has been good or bad, or what responsibilities are waiting for them at home.

Yet they’re still there.

Showing up.

Working.

Trying.

Hoping for a better day.

And somehow, that made me reflect on my own life.

Maybe I should complain a little less.

Maybe I should appreciate what I already have a little more.

Maybe I should remind myself that as long as I’m healthy and still have opportunities to move forward, there’s always something to be grateful for.

This doesn’t mean our problems are insignificant compared to someone else’s.

Everyone’s struggles are valid.

But sometimes, seeing life from a different perspective helps us regain the motivation we’ve lost.

Exercise, Street Food, and Supporting Local Businesses

There’s another thing I love about Car Free Day in Jakarta.

You can exercise and support local businesses at the same time.

You might arrive with the intention of burning calories, walking several kilometers, or going for a morning jog.

But then you see all those tempting food stalls.

And suddenly, your fitness plan turns into a culinary adventure.

You came to burn calories.

You leave having consumed even more.

Well, that’s life. Haha!

But seriously, I think this is one of the beautiful things about Car Free Day.

Beyond promoting a healthier lifestyle and bringing communities together, it also creates economic opportunities for micro, small, and medium enterprises, known in Indonesia as UMKM.

Every time we buy a drink, a snack, or something from a local vendor, we’re contributing to someone’s business.

For us, buying a cup of coffee or a small snack might seem insignificant.

But for a street vendor, every sale matters.

It’s part of the reward for waking up early, preparing everything, and working hard throughout the morning.

We get something we enjoy.

They get another customer.

We’re happy. They’re happy. Everybody wins.

Sometimes, happiness really can be that simple.

Life Goes On, No Matter What We’re Going Through

This morning reminded me that life lessons don’t always come from books, motivational speakers, or inspirational videos.

Sometimes, the best lessons come from ordinary moments.

From watching a street vendor patiently serve customers.

From seeing someone work hard to provide for their family.

From watching people laugh, exercise, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Or simply from realizing that while we may be struggling with our own problems, the world continues moving.

Everyone has their own journey.

Some people are celebrating success.

Some are trying to survive difficult circumstances.

Some are rebuilding their lives after setbacks.

And others are simply doing their best to make it through another day.

So, if you’re reading this and life feels a little overwhelming right now, here’s something I’d like to share.

Try stepping outside.

Go for a walk.

Visit a park.

Explore your neighborhood.

Watch people going about their daily lives.

You don’t necessarily have to spend money or travel somewhere far away.

Sometimes, just being outside and seeing the world from a different perspective can help clear your mind.

It won’t magically solve all your problems.

But it might remind you that life still has so much to offer.

And that tomorrow is another opportunity to try again.

My Takeaway from Car Free Day Jakarta

I went to Car Free Day in Thamrin this Sunday morning expecting nothing more than a little exercise, some fresh morning air, and perhaps a few snacks along the way.

But I came home with something more meaningful.

A reminder to be grateful.

A reminder to appreciate the hard work of others.

And most importantly, a reminder to keep moving forward, no matter what challenges life brings.

Car Free Day isn’t just about traffic-free streets, jogging, cycling, or street food.

For me, this morning, it was also about seeing life from a different perspective.

It was about recognizing the determination of ordinary people doing extraordinary things just to make a living.

And it was about realizing that sometimes, when we’re feeling lost, discouraged, or overwhelmed, we don’t need a complicated solution to find a little motivation.

Sometimes, we simply need to step outside and look around.

Because the world is full of people who are still showing up, still trying, and still fighting for a better tomorrow.

So whatever you’re going through today, keep going.

Take care of your health.

Appreciate the little things.

Be grateful for what you have while continuing to work toward what you want.

And if you happen to visit Car Free Day Jakarta, don’t forget to support the local vendors.

Buy a snack, grab a drink, or simply appreciate the effort behind their small businesses.

You never know how much a simple purchase might mean to someone.

Stay healthy. Stay grateful. And never lose the courage to keep going.
