Not everyone who changes your life does so through grand gestures. Sometimes, all it takes is a conversation, a little encouragement, and someone who sees possibilities in you that you haven’t fully seen in yourself.

I’ve been thinking lately about how certain people become part of our stories in ways we never really expected.

Sometimes, they don’t even realize how much influence they’ve had.

They simply listen, offer their perspective, and say something that stays with us long after the conversation ends.

And somehow, months or years later, we find ourselves living a life that might have looked very different without those small moments.

I have someone like that in my life.

Someone whose words once helped me make a decision that would eventually shape my professional journey.

When Life Presented Two Different Paths

There was a time when I found myself standing at a crossroads in my career.

I had received an opportunity to work as a Personal Assistant at a commercial company in Bali. Around the same time, another opportunity appeared: a position in higher education as a lecturer.

Both opportunities represented different possibilities.

One would take me into the corporate world, with its fast-paced environment, professional demands, and perhaps a completely different lifestyle.

The other would lead me into academia, a world of teaching, continuous learning, research, and intellectual growth.

I wasn’t entirely sure which direction I should take.

So, as I often did when something important was on my mind, I shared the situation with someone whose opinion I valued.

I told him about both opportunities.

He listened and offered his thoughts.

He felt that working in a commercial environment might be demanding and could keep me constantly busy.

Then he suggested something that stayed with me.

“It’s better to work in the education field rather than in a commercial one.”

It wasn’t a long speech.

It wasn’t a complicated career consultation.

Just a simple perspective from someone I trusted.

But sometimes, simple words arrive at exactly the right moment.

The Decision That Led Me Into Academia

After that conversation, I decided to follow up on the opportunity to become a lecturer.

I went through the necessary steps, pursued the position, and eventually found myself entering the world of higher education.

And now, here I am.

A lecturer.

Sometimes, when I think about it, I still find it fascinating how life unfolds.

A decision that once felt uncertain has become part of my identity.

Today, I have the opportunity to stand in front of students, share knowledge, encourage curiosity, and continue learning alongside the people I teach.

Of course, the journey hasn’t always been easy.

Teaching comes with responsibilities that go far beyond the classroom. There are lessons to prepare, students to guide, academic expectations to meet, and so many things to learn along the way.

But there is something meaningful about being part of an environment where education can shape people’s futures.

And sometimes, I remember that conversation.

I wonder what my life would look like today if I had chosen the other path.

Perhaps I would be living a completely different story.

But this is the one I’m living now.

And I’m grateful for it.

When Someone Encourages You to Dream Bigger

What makes this story even more meaningful to me is that his encouragement didn’t stop when I became a lecturer.

He also suggested that I consider pursuing a PhD.

A doctorate.

Another journey that would require years of dedication, discipline, research, and personal growth.

I don’t know exactly what the future holds or when that chapter might begin.

But I appreciate having someone who encourages me to think beyond where I am today.

Sometimes, we become so focused on our immediate responsibilities that we forget to imagine what else might be possible.

And then someone reminds us.

Someone says, in their own way, “You can go further.”

I think there’s something beautiful about that.

Not because we need another person to define our ambitions, but because encouragement can help us recognize possibilities we may have overlooked.

At the end of the day, we still have to do the work ourselves.

We have to make the decisions, face the challenges, and take responsibility for the paths we choose.

But having someone believe in our potential can make the journey feel a little less intimidating.

The Complicated Beauty of Human Connections

As I’ve grown older, I’ve realized that relationships are rarely as simple as we imagine.

Someone can bring genuine goodness into our lives while the relationship itself still contains uncertainty.

We can appreciate someone’s influence and still have questions about where we stand.

We can feel grateful for the past while being unsure about the future.

And perhaps that’s what makes human connections so complicated.

Not everyone who matters to us fits neatly into a simple definition.

Some people become part of our emotional world.

Some become part of our personal growth.

Others leave an influence on our decisions, ambitions, and the way we imagine our future.

Sometimes, one person can be all of those things.

And when that happens, their presence becomes difficult to explain.

Because it’s no longer only about how you feel about them.

It’s also about the memories, conversations, encouragement, and moments that have quietly become part of who you are.

Gratitude Doesn’t Always Require Certainty

One thing I’m learning is that I don’t need to know exactly how every relationship will unfold to appreciate what it has brought into my life.

The future can remain uncertain while the gratitude is real.

I can acknowledge that someone’s advice helped me at an important moment without believing that every decision in my life belongs to them.

I can appreciate their encouragement while recognizing the effort I’ve invested in becoming who I am.

And I can be thankful for the role someone has played in my journey without needing to know the ending of our story.

Perhaps that’s a more peaceful way of looking at things.

Because not every meaningful connection comes with a clear explanation.

Not every important conversation feels important when it’s happening.

Sometimes, we only understand its significance much later.

When we look back and realize how much has changed.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

Today, when I think about my career, I feel grateful.

Grateful for the opportunities that came my way.

Grateful for the courage to pursue something unfamiliar.

Grateful for the people who offered encouragement when I was trying to decide which direction to take.

And grateful for the version of myself who decided to try.

I still have so much to learn.

There are still professional goals I hope to achieve, places I want to explore, and perhaps another academic degree waiting somewhere in my future.

But for now, I’m learning to appreciate where I am.

The classroom.

The students.

The challenges.

The quiet satisfaction of knowing that I’m building something meaningful through education.

And somewhere in the story of how I arrived here, there is a conversation I still remember.

A few words of advice.

A different perspective.

A gentle push toward a path I eventually chose for myself.

Some people may never know how much their words have influenced our lives.

And sometimes, even when we don’t know what place they will have in our future, we can still be grateful for the part they played in helping us become who we are today.

Perhaps that’s one of the most beautiful things about human connection.

A person doesn’t have to have all the answers for us.

Sometimes, they simply help us see another possibility.

And the rest of the journey becomes ours to discover.
