The Spaces Between Expectations

There is something strangely vulnerable about caring for someone before you even know where you stand in their life.

It isn’t the grand gestures that make you question everything. It is often the smallest moments.

A message.
A delayed reply.
A trip you didn’t know about.

Recently, I found out that someone I care about was in another city. It wasn’t a secret. He simply mentioned it when I asked if he was free to talk.

For a brief moment, my heart whispered,

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

It wasn’t anger.

It wasn’t even disappointment.

It was something quieter.

A question I wasn’t ready to admit.

“Am I important enough to be someone you think of when something happens in your life?”

Sometimes, we confuse information with affection.

We assume that if someone cares, they will naturally tell us everything. But people love differently. Some share every detail of their day. Others don’t even tell their closest friends where they are until someone asks.

The difficult part is that our minds dislike uncertainty.

When there is silence, we create stories.

Maybe he met someone else.

Maybe I’m not special.

Maybe I’m the only one hoping.

Yet none of those thoughts are facts.

They are simply our fears trying to protect our hearts from disappointment.

I’ve learned that expectations are delicate. They often appear long before commitment does.

And perhaps that’s where wisdom begins—not by suppressing our feelings, but by recognizing the difference between what we feel and what we actually know.

I realized that I don’t need immediate answers.

I don’t need to fill every silence with assumptions.

Some questions are better answered by time than by overthinking.

If someone says, “I’ll call you on Monday,” then Monday will reveal more than a hundred imagined scenarios ever could.

Love, friendship, or whatever this may become, deserves the chance to unfold naturally.

Maybe one day we’ll look back and laugh at the worries that once occupied our hearts.

Or maybe we’ll discover that some people are only meant to teach us patience.

Either way, I hope I never lose the ability to care.

Because feeling deeply has never been the problem.

The challenge is learning to love without letting uncertainty steal today’s peace.
