Today reminded me how dangerous assumptions can be.
Just a few hours earlier, I had almost convinced myself that the story was over.
The silence felt meaningful.
The uncertainty felt like an answer.
And because I could not see what was happening on the other side, my mind quietly started filling in the blanks.
Maybe he was no longer interested.
Maybe he had moved on.
Maybe I should stop hoping altogether.
The funny thing is that none of those conclusions were based on facts.
They were based on absence.
And absence has a way of becoming a canvas for our fears.
Then, unexpectedly, the phone rang.
We talked for about thirty minutes.
Nothing dramatic happened.
No grand declarations.
No life-changing conversations.
Just two people talking about life, travel, family, and ordinary things.
And somehow, that was enough to remind me that reality is often much simpler than the stories we create in our minds.
There was one moment that made me laugh.
He told me that I should visit his home country someday.
For a brief second, my imagination started writing its own version of the story.
Perhaps he would personally show me around.
Perhaps he would become my tour guide.
Perhaps…
Then he casually added:
“I know someone there who can guide you. Maybe I can refer him to you.”
Well.
That certainly ended my imaginary movie rather quickly.
I had already written a scene that did not exist.
And maybe that was the lesson.
Not every kind word is a hidden message.
Not every conversation leads somewhere.
And not every unanswered question needs to be answered immediately.
Sometimes life is simply asking us to stay present.
To listen.
To enjoy the conversation.
To appreciate the moment without rushing toward a conclusion.
Tonight, I am smiling at how quickly my mind can jump ahead of reality.
And I am reminding myself, once again:
I do not know how this story will end.
But I do not need to know everything today.
